More from the Juan Soto podcast: "The #Nationals made me three offers: first, an offer similar to Ronald Acuña Jr.'s deal; then another offer similar to Fernando Tatis Jr.'s contract; and then came the $440 million offer. If they had signed Turner, Rendon and Harper, I would have accepted an offer even lower than $440 million"

I agree 100% with this quote

Ridiculous. Rendon never plays. They did sign Stras instead. Harper was gone the year before the championship. Is he saying his future was tied to Trae Turner? Soto really needs to stop talking about this because he’s kind of ruining his legacy as a Nat

A few years back, The Missions down in San Antonio changed their name to The Flying Chanclas. Still one of my favorite uniforms.

The Copa designs are some of the best things to come out of MiLB. A good number of them could be full-time identities without a doubt.

Looks like the death knells have finally fully sounded for a new ballpark next to the Trop:
https://apnews.com/article/tampa-bay-rays-ballpark-cae72812c5f9d04804c139e06764a048

The team issued a statement by principal owner Stuart Sternberg saying “a series of events” in October, which included severe damage to the the Trop and financing delays, led to what he called “this difficult decision.”

“After careful deliberation, we have concluded we cannot move forward with the new ballpark and development project at this moment,” Sternberg said.

Looks like repairs are underway on Tropicana Field to have it ready for play for 2026. And the Rays will play there through the 2028 season. After that? Who knows.

You know what pissed me was a article I read that said Manfred and owners were looking to force the TB owners to sell.. Well what about that fuckwit who owns the As? Couldn't they have forced him out?
I originally wrote [see also: A's], but then realized that also applied to more owners and didn't want to write out a giant list 😅

They have literally been pursuing this new stadium deal since approximately the day after Sternberg took control of the Devil Rays in 2005.

I absolutely do not understand this.
Sternberg has zero interest in spending money. He owns the team, purely to siphon as much profit as possible out of it. ROI über alles, aka, the Private Equity model.

Paying money to build a new stadium pushes earnings too far into the future, hence why he still hasn't made a deal. The only reason this last one got close was because he got a Brave's deal, where he could hide profits via real estate development off the backs of taxpayers - then costs went up and he couldn't hit his short term profit margin expectations - so he walked.

Tried out the Square Scorebook from 7-2 Double Play today at the Pirates/Phillies Spring Breakout game.

This is using their standard paper, not the "Rite-in-the-Rain® water-resistant paper".

This paper was really great with my fountain pen, and the bleed-through was absolutely minimal (honestly, I couldn't even really see it until I was looking really closely before taking that second picture).

Again, the same pen/nib/ink combo as my last couple: LAMY Safari, LAMY EF, LAMY Vibrant Pink.

Yeah, that little showing through? That’s some really nice paper they’ve put there!

Looks like Opening Day in the Tokyo Series next week will be Yamamoto for the Dodgers and Imanaga for the Cubs on Tuesday (Monday here). Which is just cool! Game 2 the next day? Sasaki makes his Major League debut for LA against Chicago’s Justin Steele.

A trek to Tropicana Field, baseball’s haunted house: Blue skies, but no Rays

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Baseball’s haunted house still lurks by the highway, impossible to miss. For three decades, Tropicana Field’s famous slanted white roof towered above I-275. Now the blue skies gleam through its rafters.

“Sad,” said Rays ace Shane McClanahan.

“Devastating,” said catcher Ben Rortvedt.

“Horrible,” said the Rays’ one-time manager, Joe Maddon.

“I didn’t believe it,” said their current manager, Kevin Cash.

It has now been more than five months since Hurricane Milton unleashed nature’s wrath on the Trop, leaving fragments of its fiberglass roof flapping in the 100 mph winds. Those fragments are gone. But there are so many questions about what comes next — for this ballpark and the team it used to house, the Tampa Bay Rays — that if we typed them all up and printed them out, they’d cover the whole darned roof.

Less than two weeks before Opening Day, the Trop is all but empty. A few stadium workers come and go. Two National Disaster Response Team trucks are parked outside. But only minor repairs are underway — until the politicians and the Rays get their next moves sorted out.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd, they ruined it. Ok, not ruined but it's not up to the level of the 1st city connect. The hat seems...weird? And while I kinda dig the streets on the jersey it looks a bit messy. I wish there was more pink also

I'll wait for higher res pictures before deciding my final thoughts.

I will likely never revisit this thread (not trying to be a jerk, just MLB isn't my thing), BUT...every time I see the tile, I read/sing it to the tune of Strangers in the Night.

This is about the level of the Cleveland City Connect, definitely a tier below the cherry-blossom one.

Maybe that means Cleveland will get a new and awesome one. NOT stratocaster themed, put those pencils down

OK, last fountain pen test of the scorebooks I have on-hand: This is The Pro Baseball Fan's Essential Scorekeeper, from Palo Verde Press.

Feathering on this one was a little more than the prior couple, and bleed-through is definitely more noticeable. It's a very nice little scorebook, just not suitable for fountain pen use (or, probably, the Sharpie Pens I tend to gravitate to more often for my score-keeping). This would be fine if you're all about pencils or ball-point pens, though.

Again, the same pen/nib/ink combo on this as before: LAMY Safari, LAMY EF, LAMY Vibrant Pink.
